How to Send Luggage in Switzerland: SBB vs Private Transfer
Switzerland has two ways to move your bags while you travel by train: the national rail service (SBB) and private dedicated-vehicle operators. SBB is cheaper. Private is faster and works where SBB cannot. Here is exactly how to tell which one your trip needs, with current 2026 prices from both sides.
The short answer
Use SBB if you can book by 12 noon the day before, you are moving between two normal addresses, and you have four bags or fewer. Standard delivery takes two days and costs CHF 12 per item. Same-day express costs about CHF 124 for two bags.
Use a private dedicated vehicle if you are landing at Zurich Airport and want your bags at the hotel tonight, if you missed the SBB deadline, if you have five or six pieces, if you are going somewhere SBB excludes, or if you need to cross a border.
The structural gap: SBB station-to-door has no express option at all. From Zurich Airport, SBB cannot get your bags to your hotel the same day.

Real numbers
What each option actually costs
SBB door to door, 2-day standard: CHF 50 + (2 × CHF 12) = CHF 74
SBB door to door, same-day express: CHF 50 + CHF 50 + (2 × CHF 12) = CHF 124
SwissASAP dedicated vehicle, Zurich Airport to Lucerne, 1–6 pieces: CHF 191
SBB door to door, same-day express: CHF 50 + CHF 50 + (6 × CHF 12) = CHF 172
SwissASAP dedicated vehicle, 1–6 pieces, same price as one bag: CHF 191 to Lucerne
At six pieces the two are almost level — CHF 172 versus CHF 191 — but one is shared logistics with a noon-the-day-before deadline, and the other is your own vehicle booked the same morning. SBB charges per item; a private vehicle does not.
Zurich Airport to Lucerne, 1–6 pieces: CHF 191
Zurich Airport to Interlaken, 1–6 pieces: CHF 386
Zurich Airport to Zermatt, Täsch station, 1–6 pieces: CHF 632
Zurich Airport to Zermatt Village, 1–6 pieces: CHF 666
These are the new 2026–2027 rates, in effect from 1 December 2026 and lower than the current list on most routes. One price, one vehicle, one to six pieces up to 150 kg — a solo traveller and a family of five pay the same. Peak-date surcharges apply from 20 December to 3 January and on winter weekends. Your exact price is confirmed before payment.
Read this honestly: on price alone, SBB usually wins. A traveller with two bags and a flexible schedule should book SBB and save money. Private transfer is worth its premium when speed, coverage, bag count or certainty matter more than the difference in francs.
Decide in thirty seconds
Which one is right for your trip
Book SBB if
- You can order by 12 noon the day before collection
- You have four bags or fewer and you are travelling as a couple or solo
- Both addresses are normal, accessible Swiss addresses
- Two days is fine, and you can pack an overnight bag to carry
- Budget matters more than timing
- Your whole trip stays inside Switzerland
Book a private dedicated vehicle if
- You land at Zurich Airport and want your bags at the hotel the same day
- You are past the SBB noon-the-day-before deadline
- You have five or six pieces, or ski, snowboard and sports gear
- You are heading to a car-free village and want delivery in the village, not at the valley station
- Your route crosses into France, Italy, Germany or Austria
- You want to see where your bags are and talk to a person if plans change
The case SBB cannot cover
Arriving at Zurich Airport and wanting your bags at the hotel tonight
This is the single most common Switzerland luggage question, and it is the one place where the national service genuinely cannot help.
SBB same-day express exists only on the door to door product, which collects from an address. An airport arrivals hall is not a collection address. The product that starts at a station — station to door — has no express option at all. It is two days, full stop.
So on arrival day the SBB path is: drag your bags to the luggage counter at Zurich Airport station, hand them in, and collect them at your hotel two days later. For a seven-day trip that is two days without your clothes.
A private dedicated vehicle collects from arrivals and delivers to the hotel the same day. That is the entire reason the service exists, and it is why airport arrival day is where most private bookings come from.

Zermatt, Wengen, Mürren
Car-free villages need a closer look
Switzerland car-free resorts are exactly where you least want to be hauling suitcases, and exactly where luggage logistics get complicated.
SBB adds a CHF 30 car-free location surcharge and maintains a specific list of which car-free places it serves. Some locations are excluded entirely. Check the SBB car-free locations list for your village before you count on it.
With a private transfer the question to ask is different and more important: does the price include delivery inside the village, or only to the valley station? Being left at Lauterbrunnen or Täsch with four suitcases and a cogwheel train to catch is not the outcome you paid for. See the Zurich Airport to Zermatt route guide for how the village leg works in practice. SwissASAP delivers into the village, and the village leg is priced openly: CHF 50 extra inside Zermatt and CHF 200 inside Wengen or Mürren for one to six pieces. It appears in your quote before you pay, not as a surprise on arrival.

Six mistakes that cost travellers their luggage plan
1. Assuming standard means same day
The SBB default is two days. Same day is a separate paid express option on one product only.
2. Missing the noon deadline
Express must be registered by 12 noon the day before collection. At 3pm the day before, that option is gone.
3. Not packing an overnight bag
If you use a two-day service, you need one or two nights of clothes and medication with you. Plan it before you hand the bags over.
4. Forgetting the village leg
Delivery to the valley station is not delivery to your hotel. Confirm which one you are buying.
5. Booking per bag for a group
Per-item pricing punishes families. Six pieces on a per-item service adds up fast; one vehicle does not.
6. Leaving cross-border to chance
The SBB service covers Switzerland and Liechtenstein. A leg into Italy or France needs a private quote.
Questions people actually ask
Switzerland luggage transfer FAQ
How much does it cost to send luggage in Switzerland?
SBB charges CHF 12 per item for station-to-station transport, plus a flat CHF 30 for station-to-door or CHF 50 for door-to-door. Same-day express adds CHF 50. A private dedicated-vehicle transfer is priced per vehicle rather than per bag and Zurich Airport to Lucerne is CHF 191, Zurich Airport to Interlaken is CHF 386, and Zurich Airport to Zermatt Village is CHF 666. Each of those covers one to six pieces in one vehicle.
Can I get same-day luggage delivery in Switzerland?
Yes, in two ways. SBB offers same-day express on its door-to-door service for an extra CHF 50, but you must register by 12 noon on the day before collection and the pickup must be an address. Private operators such as SwissASAP deliver same day from hotels, Airbnbs, airports and stations, usually without a day-before deadline.
Can SBB deliver my luggage from Zurich Airport to my hotel the same day?
No. SBB same-day express applies only to its door-to-door product, which collects from an address. The station-to-door product, which is what you would use from Zurich Airport station, has no express option and takes two days. For same-day airport-to-hotel delivery you need a private transfer.
How long does SBB luggage transport take?
Two days as standard. Luggage handed in at a station or collected from an address is delivered two days later. The only same-day option is door-to-door express, booked by 12 noon the day before.
Does luggage transfer work to car-free villages like Zermatt and Wengen?
Yes, with conditions. SBB applies a CHF 30 car-free location surcharge and serves a defined list of car-free places, with some locations excluded. Private operators can usually deliver into the village itself, but confirm whether the quoted price includes the village leg or only reaches the valley station.
Is luggage transfer worth it for a family?
Usually yes, and the more bags you have the better it gets. Per-item services charge for every piece, so a family with six bags pays six times. A dedicated vehicle is one price for one to six pieces, which makes the per-person cost drop sharply for families and small groups.
Can I send luggage from Switzerland to Italy, France or Germany?
Not through the standard SBB domestic service, which covers Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Cross-border legs into Italy, France, Germany or Austria are handled by private operators on a quoted basis.
Do I get a discount on luggage with a Swiss Travel Pass?
Discounts on the SBB shared luggage service are offered periodically as promotions, including seasonal offers of up to 50 percent for pass holders. These apply to the SBB service, not to private dedicated-vehicle transfers, which are a separate premium product. Details of the current offer are on the Swiss Travel Pass luggage offer page.
