How the day runs

Pick-up at your hotel
Your driver and guide collect you and head into the Bernese Oberland. Roughly two hours from Zurich, and the valley scenery starts well before you arrive.

Up to Schilthorn
The Schilthornbahn climbs in stages from Stechelberg through Gimmelwald and Mürren to Birg, then to the summit at 2,970 m. The last section is the steepest cable car ride in the world.

Piz Gloria and the terrace
Brunch at the revolving restaurant while the view turns a full circle, then the Bond World exhibition and the Thrill Walk cliff path at Birg on the way down.

Mürren
A car-free village on a ledge facing the Jungfrau massif. Wooden chalets, no traffic, and one of the best-placed viewpoints in Switzerland.

Gimmelwald and the cheese farm
Smaller and quieter still — about 130 people live here. A tasting at a working alpine dairy, with your guide explaining how mountain cheese is actually made.

Questions people ask before booking
Why is this one more expensive than the other day tours?
Because most of the mountain is already paid for. The Schilthorn cable car alone is CHF 132 a head, and this price also carries the brunch at the summit, the cheese tasting, and a local guide in four separate villages rather than a driver who waits at the bottom. Add those up for two people and the gap closes; for four it is the cheaper way round.
Is Piz Gloria worth it if I do not care about James Bond?
Yes. The Bond connection is why people know it, but the reason to go is that the terrace lines up the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in one frame from a genuinely high summit. The restaurant turns, so you see the whole panorama from your table.
How hard is the walking?
Easy. The cable cars do all the climbing. Mürren and Gimmelwald are village lanes on gentle slopes, and the Thrill Walk is a railed cliff path, not a hike. Comfortable shoes are enough.
Can we do this from somewhere other than Zurich?
Yes — Lucerne, Bern and Geneva as well, at the same price. Bern and Lucerne are around nine hours, Geneva closer to eleven because of the drive.
What happens if the summit is in cloud?
Your guide checks the mountain webcams before you commit to the top section. If it is closed in, the villages, the dairy and the valley are still worth the day, and you save the summit fare.
